A SUSTAINABLE HOTEL IN THE MOST RURAL IBIZA
Can Lluc, a rural hotel in Ibiza with a rich history, successfully preserves its Ibiza essence while driving environmental protection, operating based on values of commitment and sustainability in all aspects.
Several centuries ago, this rural hotel located in the heart of Ibiza was a working estate owned by the family of the current owner, Lucas Prats. The original architecture was carefully restored to become what we now know as Can Lluc.
While preserving the Ibiza essence, the owners keep the history of the place alive and drive environmental protection, in a setting of nature and luxury.
The business vision aims to contribute through tourism to the conservation and improvement of the 10-hectare estate and its immediate surroundings, ensuring that future generations can proudly inherit their legacy.
This commitment leads to operating based on various values, including a commitment to the planet to preserve and improve what is within their reach. Sustainability is emphasized in all aspects: economic, cultural, environmental, and social.
Why is Can Lluc sustainable?
The commitment to local care has always been present in the DNA of Can Lluc. Specifically, some actions that have been carried out include:Solar Panels
59,950Wp of solar panels were installed in 2023, comprising 110 solar panels with 545Wp each. Additionally, two 36kW grid inverters were installed, achieving a nominal power of 72kW, with the potential for future expansion. The expected generation from this installation is 89,925Wh/year, resulting in a hotel consumption savings of up to 47%. This corresponds to a reduction of 20,677kg of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, equivalent to planting 650 trees.
Water Filtration System
The pool features a water filtration system based on saline electrolysis, replacing synthetic chlorine with natural elements like water and salt. The hotel sources salt from the Salinas de Ibiza. This system avoids the use of harmful chemicals, making the water pleasant for swimming with a slight salty taste and a skin-friendly feel.
Fire Prevention and Tank
Can Lluc is situated in a beautiful valley, surrounded by lush pine forests, between s’Atalaya de Sant Rafel and es Coll den Lluc—an ecologically valuable area. In 2018, in collaboration with Ibanat and the Associació de Propietaris Forestals d’Eivissa (APFE), a fire tank was installed to enhance firefighting capabilities against large fires that have affected the island in the past.
Local Products
The restaurant menu proudly features a variety of local products, primarily sourced from nearby farms, supporting small local businesses while offering quality dishes to guests. Can Lluc’s agrotourism cultivates various fruit trees, notably olives, producing the delightful Extra Virgin Olive Oil (AOVE) enjoyed by all guests and friends.
Collaboration with Ibiza Preservation
The arrival of snakes with the olive trees from the peninsula threatens the Ibiza wall lizard, a native animal of the island, putting it at risk of extinction. Can Lluc is joining the Ibiza Preservation project by distributing various snake traps throughout the hotel’s estate. In this way, the aim is to protect autochthonous ecosystems.
Social Commitment
The nearest town to the hotel, San Rafael, is only 2.9 km away. Here, the Can Lluc family’s story begins, and it is the main focus of the company’s social and collaborative efforts.
For example, collaborations are carried out with various associations and entities with the aim of promoting local culture, participation in village activities, the promotion of sports, and rural life, among others:
- Association of elderly people
- Parish of San Rafael
- Colla de Ball Pagès, traditional dances
- Sant Rafel football club
- Agricultural Cooperative of San Antoni de Portmany
Awareness
In its effort to contribute to sustainability awareness, the organization is involved in raising awareness not only among management and employees but also encourages collaborators and customers, as well as relevant public administrations, to adopt a proactive attitude.
