There are as many Ibizas as there are visitors: the nightlife Ibiza, the beach Ibiza, the hippy Ibiza, the party Ibiza, the family-friendly Ibiza, the peaceful Ibiza…
To experience the most authentic Ibiza, the best option is to stay in a rural tourism establishment. GIven the variety of rural accommodations available, it is important to understand what type of establishment you are booking and what services it offers.
There are four types of rural accommodations according to Balearic regulations: agrotourism, rural hotels, vacation homes, and inland tourism. Each has a legal designation and tourism license code. But what are they and how do they differ?
Differences between types of rural tourism in Baleares
Agrotourism
These are properties established before 1961, with an area of 21.000m2. They maintain agricultural, livestock or forestry operations. Historically, they provided supplementary income for farmers. Quality levels are less stringent, with up to 12 rooms. There are no requirements for restaurant services, although many offer them.
Rural Hotel
The property must be older than 1941 with an area of 49.000 m2. It can have up to 25 rooms. Rural hotels are required to provide restaurant services, as well as lodging and breakfast. In Balearic tourism regulations, the philosophy is to equate them with 4 and 5-star hotels. Most agrotourism and rural hotel accommodarions are designed at a high-end level, such as Can Lluc, an exclusive, romantic, family-friendly and tranquil agrotourism in the center of Ibiza.
Vacation Homes
Another type of rural accommodation is vacation homes (with license numbers ETV-000), also known as country houses. These are single-family homes that legally can have up to 6 rooms and must be rented as a whole unit, not by rooms. In some cases, the number of rooms can be increased to meet the needs of the renting family.
It is especially important to book through secure channels and websites that identify each house with its tourism code and verify the services offered to avoid disappointment upon arrival. Each year thera are cases of bookings for fictiuous or non-existent houses or those that differ significantly from what was advertised.
Services and Facilities commonly offered by Agrotourism and Rural Hotels
Most agrotourism and rural hotels in Ibza must meet multiple quality requirements and offer top-notch facilities and variety of services, staffed by professional and well-prepared teams. These services are generally superior to those offered by a country house. The increasing nnumber of country houses makes rigorous quality control difficult for the administration.
Services and facilities offered exclusively by rural hotels and agrotourisms include breakfast, restaurant, massages and treatmets, gym, meeting or event rooms, ensuring that guests have all their needs met and can fully enjoy their vacation.
At Can Lluc, all these services are offered, along with a restaurant and event area at the foot of the mountain and in the heart of nature. These establishments are usually highly commited to the environment, dedicating large areas to the care of property and the protection and cleaning of forests, planting and harvesting seasonal fruits, and using these natural products in their restaurant, offering guests from big cities a fun and exclusive experience.
The most important aspect often is the direct attention from the owner’s family (often passing down a history inherited from their ancestors who live in the house now converted into a hotel) and the high quality of the staff, well-prepared and qualified to provide excellent service.
